about

This song is a search for meaning. A social commentary on the greed and lack of morality that seem to dominate in our modern society. It is as much an inward look at myself as it is a judgement of others. I’m jostling with the idea of being a human, mortal and flawed. As long as I can remember I’ve ruminated on the meaning of life. Never feeling connected to Catholicism, even though it was the backdrop of my youth. As young as 8 or 9 I can remember feeling disconnected to and confused by the church and its symbols. And I carried this as a sense of shame into my adulthood. I’ve buried this guilt now. It has no place or function. Just like I believe the church has no role in a maturing Irish culture, learning to be compassionate with, and confident in itself.
To me, human nature is neither good nor bad. It has the capacity to be both. It can cause collective hurt and joy. It can swing like a pendulum in each of us, become stuck on one side, or losing sense of its moral compass. Sometimes it’s hard not to dwell on the imbalance and injustice in the world. Knowing that, by dint of your privilege and comfort, there exists poverty and struggle. “When you’re on top, you’re the profit of some pain”.
While travelling in Central America, six years ago, I realised that my purpose was music. It is my passion, Since then I have tried to live without money driving my decisions. I’ve let music guide the way. The lure of conservative Ireland has been, at times, hard to repel. I’ve blocked out the “killer chorus” of settle down, buy a house, get married, because I know my happiness is
tied to being honest with myself and what I desire.
I don’t desire to take the path of least resistance, nor to pretend to be acquainted with someone else’s faith. I don’t desire to sacrifice the present for the promise of a future that may never arrive. I don’t desire to ignore my will to become the best musician I can be. I trust the universe. As my momma said; “it won’t pass us by if it’s meant for us”.

lyrics

Dig the well deeper now
You caught me on the waves
Of a feeling I could do without
My reflection says I've aged
If you're on top, you're the profit of some pain
Held to ransom by the greed that you can't shake
All choked up by the patriotic games
You won't get me with no killer chorus
You can't pay me to forget my morals
Cause my momma said, my momma said
It won't pass us by if it's meant for us
I buried my religion down
Abandoned in the caves
Of history repeating hell
Ambivalent to names
And by dumb luck, I'm a primate in a cape
As long as prejudice is sleeping with the saints
We'll be all good
I'm a pagan with a brain
You won't get me with no killer chorus
You can't pay me to forget my morals
Cause my momma said, my momma said
"It won't pass us by if it's meant for us"
But life is porous
And dying rays are always gorgeous
My poppa said, my poppa said
"The things we love are worth the orbit"
Oh my god, oh my god
You caught me on the waves
Oh my God, oh my God
Times have changed
When animals don't eat they waste away
You won't get me with no killer chorus
You can't pay me to forget my morals
Cause my momma said, my momma said
"It won't pass us by if it's meant for us"
